Study Unit 2: Listening and responding to music

This week has been quite nice. The workload is finally getting little better. I was quite sick last week so I have been catching up and working from where I stopped last. I like working ahead so I know when I get sick, I don’t get anxious about the workload.

There is so much that I found quite interesting about this work. The elements of music were quite amazing to learn about. How everything is intertwined together but still on its own. Although I already knew most of these things, I had a great time watching the videos and learning how I could teach it to my students one day.

Individual reflection

1. Contemporary Commercial Music (CCM) refer to non-classical music. This includes experimental music, folk, country, rap, hip-hop, soul, R&B, gospel, rock, pop, and the music theatre. So, when you look at the bigger picture, it includes so many genres. This would be very beneficial to the students since not everyone has the same ‘’taste’’ in music. The CCM is such a broad platform of music that your class would never be boring. You could play country music this week and the next week hip-hop.

If I think back to when I was in school, I can remember so much song we used to listen to. Whether it was songs that played on the radio in class or songs that we listened to at home in our free time. I can still remember Hannah Montana was my role model. All my friends listened to her, and to this day I still know all her songs. She sang country, hip hop, RNB. So, I believe CCM has a bigger impact on children than any other music. It attracts their attention, and it motivates them to learn faster, better, and more in dept.

2.    I believe this study unit was very insightful and inclusive. It included all the elements of music. We had an opportunity to hear how the different music instruments sound on its own and how a group of instruments sounds together. The study unit even showed us how to read a music sheet, so it covered all of elements and notes (see what I did there). Although there were lots of languages that was incorporated, like the different songs that we listened to. I don’t recall every language, but it would be impossible to cover all languages. The videos were so heartwarming and fun to watch. Although I am not a kid anymore, I learn by play and begin active.

3.    All I think I would have done is add some of the important languages, like one Afrikaans song. I wouldn’t have changed anything of the study unit. It was done interesting and interactive. Applause to the work that had been done.

Hope you have a lovely week.

Cheers vir eers.
